BBC Learning English - Quizzes
When I posted this link to that BBC homepage with the language quizzes, Fiona asked me to give you some more details about the quizzes, so here is a short overview about the quizzes.
-
Crossword: This is just a normal crossword game so all you have to do is to click one of the numbers and put in the right answer. You might click on the link they provide if you need some help or you could also ask for a hint but remember, you can only get five of those hints! After you have finished it you can also print the questions, clues and answers.
There is a box with recent crosswords themes but you can also select from an alphabetic list with older crosswords.
-
Quiznet: Here you get a couple of questions covering a certain topic and four possible answers are provided for each question. So this is the best game for all who like multiple choice questionnaires ;) You can't print this quiz directly but you can download it as PDF file. (You can also find older quiznet games if you click on “Other and older quizzes”)
-
Wordmaster: First you have to select a level (easy, medium or difficult), then you get ten questions and have to find the missing word. If you don't know it, you can click on “Definition” and you get a short explanation (which most of the time is not really helpful) but that costs you some of the 89 seconds you have to find the right word. After having found the right word, you can listen to the whole sentence if you want to or just go to the next question.
-
Beat the keeper: This is actually my favourite game, it reminds a little bit of football. First you have to choose if you want the easy or the difficult version, the difference is that you have two or four answers provided, then you have to choose the speed of the keeper and now you can start playing. The aim is to kick the ball into the corner with the right answer. You get two minutes to answer as many questions as possible, if you get the wrong one or if the keeper catches the ball, you just have to try it again.
-
Countdown quiz: This is also a multiple choice quiz. You get 90 seconds to answer six questions about general knowledge, so this means 15 seconds for every question.
-
Extra time: Another game that reminds me of football ;). You get 30 seconds to score a goal. All you have to do to score one goal is to answer three of five questions correctly. If you have more than three wrong answers the goalkeeper will save your shot.
-
Where next?: This is a “tour” of six locations in Great Britain and Ireland. At each location you have to answer some English language question. There are also some audio reports which you are supposed to listen to (I just couldn't figure out why). But you have to be careful, you only have a certain amount of “cash” for your tour, with every wrong answer you lose a bit of it and if you lose all of it, you have to start again from the first location.
I hope these descriptions make you curious because the games are really funny and useful at the same time.
