Halloween
Have you ever been wondering where Halloween originally comes from?? Well, I have and so I have searched for an answer.
According to historians, Halloween has its origins in the Celtic festival of “Samhain” which was originally spelled “Samuin”. That name comes from Old Irish and can be translated as “summer's end”. Although it was a Celtic festival and there was something supernatural about it, it is not sure if there was a connection with the dead in pre-Christian times. The word “Halloween” itself derives from “All-Hallows-Even” which is the night before the “All Hallows Day”.
An interesting fact is, that carving pumpkins in 19th century America was long related to harvest time in general and not primarily to Halloween.
The tradition of dressing up and going from house to house, begging for treats already existed in another form in the Middle Ages. Poor people went from door to door and received food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls' Day.
I hope, I could tell you something new and I wish you “Happy Halloween”! :)
