Shakespeare tops list of symbols giving Britons pride
According to a recent survey 75 percent of Britons are “proud of William Shakespeare as a symbol of Britain”. 71 percent of Britons are proud of the Union Jack, 51% of the Beatles and only 47% are proud of their Parliament.
Shakespeare is definitely one of the most important characters in British literature and I will certainly not doubt this. However, given the fact that historians are not sure whether Shakespeare existed or not of if he even wrote all his plays by himself, I think it is rather curious that so many Britons are proud of him. In our times nobody is proud of someone if they suspect him to copy his work. Shakespeare lived in other times and has published some quite important plays, such as “Romeo and Juliet” or plays about British Kings and I think this is why people are proud that he is a British symbol.
